Limon,
Colo.—July 16, 2001—Parker Ag Services, L.L.C.
and the Prowers County Commissioners will receive an achievement
award from the Environmental Protection Agency Region VIII
for their combined efforts in using biosolids from New York
City to improve the environment in Prowers County. Local
media representatives and government officials are invited
to the award ceremony in Lamar, Colo., on July 30 and the
site tour, scheduled for both July 30 and 31, 2001.
|
|
This
EPA achievement award recognizes the benefits of using biosolids
to restore and improve the land in Prowers County during
the past 10 years. Biosolids from New York City arrive daily
by train to a rail site in Carlton, which is 10 miles east
of Lamar, where the containers are inspected, removed, then
transported to the locations where the biosolids will be
applied.
|
|
In
Prowers County, the application of biosolids has helped to
reestablish the vegetation in a 300-acre sand blowout area
along the lower Arkansas River, to improve the soil quality
of the wheat fields in Prowers County, and to restore and
improve the quality of over-grazed rangeland.
|
|
Unlike
all other nitrogen sources, biosolids fertilization is strictly
controlled by the Environmental Protection Agency and the
Colorado Department of Health and Environment and is limited
to what the crop can use during the next growing cycle.
|
|
The
EPA environmental achievement award will be presented to
Parker Ag Services and the Prowers County Commissioners on
July 30, 2001, 7 p.m., at the Elks Country Club in Lamar,
Colo. The agenda for the site tour in Prowers County on July
30 and 31 is attached.
